My name is Pete A. Bernal III. Some people call me Pedro or Peter, and I am honored to serve as the Commander of the American GI Forum of Bexar County. As a veteran and lifelong advocate, I proudly continue the mission set forth by our founder, Dr. Hector P. García—fighting for justice, standing up for our veterans, and promoting education as the foundation of freedom.
In this role, I work alongside an incredible team to support local veterans, provide scholarships to students, and ensure our community’s voice is heard at the Capitol and beyond. Whether it’s advocating for housing access, protecting benefits, or advancing opportunities for the next generation, I am committed to serving those who served our nation.

My Story
I’m a proud U.S. veteran, community advocate, and Commander of the American GI Forum of Bexar County—but above all, I’m a husband, father, and grandfather who believes in faith, service, and second chances.
My journey hasn’t been easy. I’ve faced my share of struggles, including learning disabilities like dyslexia, ADHD, PTSD, and anxiety. But I refused to let those challenges define me—or stop me. With the unwavering support of my wife and family, I returned to school later in life and earned not one, but two degrees with honors from Texas A&M University–San Antonio: a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences in General Business and a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing, both cum laude.
I graduated as part of the Class of 2024, standing on stage next to my wife as she earned her master’s degree. That moment symbolized everything we fought for—breaking cycles, finishing what we started, and proving that it’s never too late to grow, lead, and leave a legacy.
Now, I’m preparing to pursue my master’s degree, not just for me, but for every veteran, every student, and every family who’s been told they’re not enough. I’m living proof that with faith, grit, and community—you can rewrite the narrative.
